It was confirmed on 30 January 2017 that the Minister of Police has withdrawn the Draft Firearms Control Amendment Bill, 2015 to the Firearms Control Act, 60 of 2000. Readers may be aware that certain portions of the 2015 Bill were highly objectionable vis-à-vis ballistic sampling and micro dots being placed on firearms, as well as dedicated sports shooters being limited to two semi-automatic rifles or shotguns.

Late Renewal Update

On Thursday 24 November 2016, an application brought by the South African Arms and Ammunitions Dealers (SAAADA) against the South African Police Service (SAPS) was heard in the North Gauteng High Court before Judge Raulinga. However, Judge Raulinga declined to grant any relief, and directed further that the matter be postponed to around 20 April 2017, with the final date still to be determined.


Here we deal with dedicated sports shooting and hunting licence applications in terms of Section 16 of the Firearm Control Act 60 of 2000 (FCA).
